Have a look around 21st Century kid, what can you see?
Google, iPad, Facebook, Youtube, Smartphones…Yes, we turned out not to be Kubrick’s Odyssey but we are undoubtedly a digital generation.
Just think about your day, your most routinely activities, digital platforms are everywhere. You may think this is a bit overreaction but the very fact that you are here reading these badly written words proves my point. We are the digital generation! More than that, we are the first generation to be completely embedded in this digital world.
Thus, just like every other industry marketing had to evolve and, in a post-modern Darwinian way, adapt to today’s world and become digital. And that is what this blog is all about: Digital Marketing.
However, before going any further, I guess I need to define what Digital Marketing truly is.
Succinctly, Digital Marketing is marketing actions that use digital mediums as its primary platform of marketing strategy. It means, banners in websites, adwords in Google, viral videos in YouTube, connecting via Facebook, Orkut, and every other social networks.
Digital Marketing is all this, it is the promotion of a certain product through any channel by the means of the Internet. And that is what makes it so different and powerful nowadays. What was once seen as disdainfully through the eyes of traditional marketers, today is the single greatest advantage of Digital Marketing.
The internet opened a very important door to the producer-consumer relationship as it “provides for dialogue with customers and among customers. This can be an opportunity to engage, understand and serve your customers as individuals”.
Indeed, nowadays costumers have much more control over the communications that they receive. And thus, direct responses techniques gave customers a crucial opportunity, which allows them to communicate their interest to the company in a two-way manner.
Therefore, more than merely describing Digital Marketing, it is important to - and again I am borrowing Mark Millar 's words - understand that:
“Digital is not just another channel: it requires a new approach to marketing and a new understanding of customer behaviour.”
But this is another story…for other posts to come.
Join me in this journey and please share your thoughts with this 21st Century blogger.
